Tridacna derasa 6-7 cm

Описание

Tridacna derasa (commonly known as the smooth giant clam or southern giant clam) is the second-largest species of giant clam in the world.

Physical Description

  • Size: Grows up to 60 cm (24 inches / about 2 feet) in length.

  • Shell: Thick, heavy, and unusually smooth with 6 to 7 vertical folds and a relative lack of the heavy scales (scutes) or rough ribs found on other species like Tridacna maxima or Tridacna gigas.

  • Mantle: Fleshy and brightly colored with wavy stripes, spots, or streaks. Colors include combinations of orange, yellow, black, and white, frequently framed or lined with brilliant blue or green patterns.

Habitat and Range

  • Geographic Distribution: Native to the tropical Indo-Pacific region, including the Coral Triangle, the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, New Caledonia, and the Philippines.

  • Depth & Environment: Inhabits clear offshore waters, sandy lagoons, protected outer reef slopes, and shallow coral rubble fields at 1 to 20 meters (up to 60 feet) deep.

  • Lifestyle: Often referred to as a "sand clam," juveniles attach via byssal threads to hard substrate, while mature clams typically detach and rest directly on sandy bottoms.

Diet and Biology

  • Photosynthesis: Relies heavily on symbiotic microalgae (zooxanthellae) living in its tissues, which use sunlight to produce carbohydrates and nutrients.

  • Feeding: Supplements its energy through filter feeding and absorbing dissolved organic compounds from the water column (phytoplankton is particularly important for smaller specimens under 10 cm).

  • Reproduction: Starts life as male and transitions into a simultaneous hermaphrodite later on
