Calcinus elegans L

Описание

Calcinus elegans—commonly known as the Electric Blue Hermit Crab, Blue-banded Hermit Crab, or Blue Line Hermit Crab—is a vibrant, small marine crustacean belonging to the family Diogenidae.

Physical Description

  • Size: Typically grows to about 3 to 5 cm (1.2 to 2 inches) in length.

  • Legs & Banding: Features striking, vivid electric blue legs with deep black or dark horizontal banding.

  • Claws (Chelae): Both chelae are nearly equal in size, exhibiting an olive-green, brownish-green, or dark greenish-black tone.

  • Antennae & Eyes: The eye stalks are blue, while the prominent antennae and mouthparts display a bright orange coloration.

  • Body: Like other hermit crabs, it possesses a soft, uncalcified abdomen that it tucks into discarded gastropod (snail) shells for protection.

Natural Habitat & Distribution

  • Geographic Range: Widely distributed across the Indo-West Pacific region, including the East and West Indian Ocean, Indonesia, the Philippines, the Great Barrier Reef, the Maldives, and the Marshall Islands.

  • Depth & Substrate: Found in shallow tropical marine waters from the intertidal and splash zones down to about 10–20 meters, inhabiting rocky bottoms, coral rubble, boulder fields, and sandy areas.

Behavior & Ecology

  • Diet: An omnivorous scavenger and detritivore; it feeds on organic debris, leftover food, and various algae (including green hair algae and cyanobacteria).

  • Shell Use: It relies on empty sea snail shells. If vacant shells are scarce, it may aggressively confront or kill live snails to claim their shells.

  • Growth: Undergoes periodic molting, shedding its exoskeleton to grow, which requires a ready supply of progressively larger empty shells in its environment.

  • Aquarium Role: Popular in marine and reef aquariums as an active member of the "clean-up crew," though it can occasionally dislodge loose coral fragments while clambering over rockwork
