A Green red Rhodactis is a popular, hardy, and vibrant soft mushroom coral (corallimorph) belonging to the family Discosomatidae, ideal for both beginner and experienced reef aquarists.
Key Characteristics
-
Appearance: Features a wavy, textured surface or fleshy tentacles with a vibrant, often fluorescent green color under blue and actinic aquarium lighting.
-
Temperament: Semi-aggressive; it requires some personal space away from neighboring corals because it can grow, spread, and potentially shade or outcompete slower-growing species.
-
Growth & Reproduction: Reproduces naturally via longitudinal fission or budding to form a low-growing living carpet.
-
No Hard Skeleton: Unlike stony corals, it relies on soft fleshy tissues, symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae), and occasional particulate feeding.
Care and Tank Requirements
-
Minimum Tank Size: At least 100 liters (approx. 26 gallons) to allow room to grow and spread.
-
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 23°C – 26°C (72°F – 78°F)
-
pH: 8.0 – 8.4
-
Salinity / Specific Gravity: 1.022 – 1.026 (1.023 – 1.025)
-
Carbonate Hardness (dKH): 8 – 12 dKH
-
Calcium: 380 – 450 mg/l
-
Lighting: Low to moderate lighting (roughly 30–150 PAR) via LED or T5 lamps. Sudden exposure to extremely bright light should be avoided to prevent tissue stress or bleaching.
-
Water Flow: Low to moderate, indirect flow to let the fleshy tissue expand naturally without trapping debris.
-
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic (zooxanthellae), but benefits from occasional supplemental micro-plankton, mysis shrimp, or finely chopped seafood
