The Red Rhodactis Mushroom (genus Rhodactis) is a popular, hardy corallimorph (often called a "mushroom coral" or false coral) prized for its vibrant red base, textured or "hairy/bubbly" surface, and contrasting blue or purple accents.
Key Characteristics & Appearance
-
Type: Corallimorpharian (soft-bodied organism closely related to both anemones and stony corals).
-
Appearance: Features a bold red body, sometimes with a subtle purple or blue base, wavy edges, and a bumpy, tentacled, or bullseye-patterned surface.
-
Temperament: Semi-aggressive; they can touch or crowd neighboring corals, so they require a little breathing room in a reef tank.
-
Growth & Movement: Fast-growing and able to slowly glide or shift across rockwork to find a preferred spot, eventually forming colorful colonies or carpets.
Care & Aquarium Requirements
-
Care Level: Easy—making them ideal for both beginner and advanced reef keepers.
-
Lighting: Low to moderate (typically 50–150 PAR); excessive or overly intense light can cause them to shrink, bleach, or suffer from oxide radical damage.
-
Water Flow: Low to gentle flow; strong currents can stress them or cause them to detach.
-
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 23–27°C (72–80°F)
-
Salinity: 1.022–1.026
-
pH: 8.0–8.4
-
Carbonate Hardness (dKH): 8–12 dKH
-
Calcium / Magnesium: Maintain standard reef levels (Calcium ~380–450 mg/l).
-
Diet: Photosynthetic (relying on zooxanthellae), supplemented 1–2 times a week with fine meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or marine snow via target feeding
